Tractor Fuel
In the beginning of the 20th Century, Kerosene continued to be used as a tractor fuel for small farmers and ranchers. As gas prices increased, diesel became more popular, and cheap gasoline after World War II caused kerosene to go away from the tractor market. Since that time, however, a number of different substitutes have been developed to make up for the disappearance of Kerosene in the tractor market. One such substitute is currently being sold under the name of Diamond Star "Diesel". Diamond Star "Diesel" actually contains a number of different vegetable oils blended together with synthetic diesel. The resulting blend is much more affordable than Kerosene, and it has led to an increase in sales of Diamond Star "Diesel".
Another potential replacement for Kerosene in the market for tractors has come on the heels of that change in popularity. Synthetic Oil "OGL" has become popular in the last few years and is being marketed by several different manufacturers under various brand names. Although it does resemble Kerosene in appearance, Oil "OGL" actually contains natural gas, and not diesel. Because it is derived from oil rather than petroleum, oil "OGL" can be used in combination with diesel engines to produce a more cost effective tractor fuel, which would make it highly attractive to ranchers and small farmers who are looking to save money on fuel, but who don't want to give up on the quality of their tractor fuel products. Oil "OGL" does not deteriorate, as it is made of synthetic materials, and its properties closely imitate that of crude oil.
No matter what kind of substitute is ultimately chosen for "Tractor Fuel", one thing is certain. As long as people have some way of procuring and using diesel, there will always be a need for a way to improve upon the performance of a typical tractor engine. People who own tractors and use regular diesel as the source of power will have to continue to keep an eye on the various fuel problems that may occur, and work to find solutions to those problems. As long as people have some way of obtaining and using diesel as an energy source, the problems ensuing from trying to replace it with something else will continue to exist.
